Mason Bee - CAT EARS - Lithurgopsis - female

Mason Bee - CAT EARS - Lithurgopsis - Female
Tonopah Desert, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
April 15, 2015
Size: 11mm
These are very close up images of a female bee in the Lithurgopsis genus. I am including extra views of her face and the "CAT EARS" feature, near the middle of it, in both sunlit and shaded conditions to demonstrate the three dimensional shape and complexity of the light reflections and shadows of this distinguishing character. The other views of her wings, abdomen and legs display a few more of her qualities, without very much pollen there, to obscure the view. These shots were all filmed inside of one Prickly Pear Cactus flower and the plant name is Opuntia engelmannii.

The "CAT EARS", facial feature is difficult to observe without clear, magnified views and yet it can be used to help discriminate between the different species of this genus.
