I feel confident calling this a male Aptenopedes aptera
Looking through Capinera, Grasshoppers of Florida, we can rule out all other species based on the coloration, general appearance of the cerci, and lack of wings. He mentions that the species usually has a yellowish or reddish stripe on the sides of the pronotum, and that the males have a white stripe on the top of the abdomen, so that all fits this fellow. Although the others on BugGuide aren't quite as flashy, we only have a few photos anyway so it's a small sample size.

Awesome, thanks
So could this actually be an adult then?
It matches this male well:

yes, I think this is an adult
Hadn't looked at OSF - now that I have, I'm even more convinced.

interesting one
Overall shape reminds me of Aptenopedes, but I've never seen the reddish coloration on one before. If not that, something in that subfamily (melanoplinae). Definitely not Chortophaga in any case :)
I'll take a closer look at it tomorrow and see what I can do.

Can see what you mean with Aptenopedes
it doesn't match any of the species on the guide though does it?
