NEW GENUS - Pegomya - Eutrichota - Male
Ames, Story County, Iowa, USA

Size: 7.5 mm
Only the second anthomyiid genus IDed... tsk tsk buguiders!... this is a rather large genus in the Neartic, with McAlpine's listing 119 spp. This specimen came to my UV last night.

keyed by the following:

1. A1 not abbreviated; Scutellum w/ ventral hairs {Anthomyiinae: Anthomyiini}
2. Middle of Proepisternum & Katepimeron w/o hairs
3. 3 postsutural DC bristles
4. lower calypter not extending beyond upper
5. Head/thorax/abdomen not whitish gray w/ 3 stripes
6. proboscis not very long/slender/tubular
7. Eyes bare
8. Head not noticably small
9. Arsiat bare
10. Metatibia w/ 2 posterodorsal preapical bristles
11. Mesotibia w/o a preapical anteroventral bristle
12. C vein ventrally with setulae near c cell; cruciate interfrontal bristles lacking.

... nothing beats a beautiful spring day and a fly to key. Cheers.

Eutrichota
This appears to be a Eutrichota. It would have been Pegomya in 1971 when Huckett constructed the key for Manual of Nearctic Diptera. The mysterious note "Eutrichota Kowarz" below couplet 35 should be read to mean "this was Pegomya in 1971, but is Eutrichota in 1987."

Griffiths (1984) writes "The presence of additional setulae (spiniform in some species) behind the vibrissa (in addition to the usual marginal setae below it) is useful for separating Eutrichota and Pegomya when sorting collections."
