Worth checking out.
There are many, many exotic anobiids that have been intercepted at various places in the U.S., so I wouldn't rule out something 'new' to your neck of the woods there.

Not Xylobi*ops
The only Xylo*biops species in the northeast is X. basilaris, which has red marks on the elytra. So unless there is another species in Iowa (not quite northeast), its probably a different genus.

Are the hind tarsi shorter than the hind tibia, or as long or longer?

I added a pic of the hind tibia/tarsi... they are shorter... I also updated these pics with some better quality ones... hope that helps.

That narrows it down at least. One option is Rhyzopertha dominica, a cosmopolitan pest species. Another is Prostephanus punctatus, a species I commonly get at lights. Also Stephanopachys spp., which have pine hosts. If no pines are around, then its most likely one of the first two.

Rhyzopertha has the "clypeus at sides distinctly shorter than labrum" (1) while the other two genera have it as long or longer. Hope that helps! And Rhyzopertha is usually 2-3 mm while Prostephanus is 4-5 mm.

After scouring the internet for pics I'm going to call this Prostephanus. Thanks for the help.
