Moab Flying Insect Mound Colony - Diadasia

Moab Flying Insect Mound Colony - Diadasia
Moab, Grand County, Utah, USA
May 2, 2015
Size: Mounds are 3"-4" in diam.
I sent the photo to the Utah Extension Office. They suggested either a solitary ground nesting wasp or bees. The diameter of the hole in each mound was approx. ΒΌ ". There were hundreds of flying winged insects swarming above the mounds. Their bodies were iridescent green and the wings were white to semi-transparent. There were several colonies and one was approx. 10' x 12'. The insects were going in and out of the holes.
