California Pear Sawfly - Pristiphora abbreviata - Pristiphora abbreviata

California Pear Sawfly - Pristiphora abbreviata - Pristiphora abbreviata
Medford, Jackson County, Oregon, USA
April 30, 2015
Size: 8mm
ID confirmed by Dr. Dave Smith. Found on Green Anjou pear. Ants nesting in the canopy of this or an adjacent tree had discovered the larvae, stung them, and carried most of them back to their nest over the next several days. Robins also came by occasionally and stood on branches, picking them off the leaves, sometimes scooping up ones that had fallen to the ground. Vespid wasps seemed to take care of the rest in this biocontrol effort. A new page can be created for this species.
