Randy's Pterodontia - Pterodontia misella - female

Randy's Pterodontia - Pterodontia misella - Female
Summit of Indian Knob, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA
April 19, 2015
An important character for species discrimination in Pterodontia is presence or absence of a 4th longitudinal vein. In Pterodontia species flavipes, misella, notomaculata and johnsoni the 4th longitudinal vein is absent as seen above, whereas both vix and westwoodi have 4th vein present.

This image also indicates the large calypter typical of all acrocerids, and the (somewhat minute!) tibial spur present in the genus Pterodontia.
