Apiocera painteri
Hello Dr. Ascher,
Could I request a guide page be created for Apiocera painteri to which this and at least one other previously unidentified Apiocera specimen belong. Most North American Apiocera (subgenus Pyrocera) are quite difficult to identify by photo only but A. painteri is a good exception with its characteristic abdominal maculations. The only other superficially similar species is A. linsleyi but its known range is only southern baja california and can be distinguished based on the shape of the median abdominal maculations and distance between the anterior ocelli and the eye margin (much shorter in A. linselyi than A. painter).
