the vast majority of clicker spp. are 'patternless'...

 
I figured -
that was true, but assumed (probably foolishly) that the patternless ones would be hard to ID without the specimen in hand?

 
well, just go thru the guide...
...and you'll be surprised how many patternless clickers get ID'd to genus or better from photos... actually, most are perfectly IDable to genus from semi-decent pics -- sometimes not offhand, but still feasible
