Ground-nesting bees NY - Colletes thoracicus

Ground-nesting bees NY - Colletes thoracicus
ORANGEBURG, ROCKLAND County, New York, USA
May 22, 2015
Size: 15-20mm
On a sandy hill-side thousands of holes and bees hovering above them could be seen during the last week. (In the same area every year large numbers of cicada killer wasps emerge in June-July.) Bees tried to enter multiple holes, if it was occupied left quickly. This image shows a typical hole and a bee about to enter.
