Nebria pallipes - female

Nebria pallipes - Female
George Washington National Forest, Augusta County, Virginia, USA
May 23, 2015
Unusual hind trochanters/coxae on these.
Might have something to do with some behavior I observed- when I overturned one rock with this species underneath, the beetle escaped by running out onto the water surface and swimming away a short distance. It swam quite well, but seemed eager to get back to land after its initial escape, as it soon turned back and returned to shore.
