Bee? Wasp? Hornet? - Cimbex americanus - Female

Size: BIG! aaprox 1.5inches
I thought it was a carpenter bee but it also looks like a wasp. It was huge. It was walking slow across the wood beam in our back yard. It waled slow so my children thought it was dying. It didn't seem to be aggressive when we were close to it (close enough!) I did not see a stinger.
