This is a pretty striking spider, so I hope someone knows what it is. From a distance I thought it was a Velvet Ant or Checkered Beetle.

You're right. Looks very similar. Are these known to mimic Velvet Ants? I'm sure I'm not the first to notice the similarity. :-)
