Large Caddisfly--detail of wing scales - Ptilostomis - female

Large Caddisfly--detail of wing scales - Ptilostomis - Female
Snowhill Road north of Cabin Branch Creek, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
May 3, 2007
Size: 24 mm
Detail shows the hair-like scales of the wings. According to Borror and White (1), the family Phryganeidae (and several others) can be separated from other caddisflies based a combination of these characters:
  • ocelli present
  • none of hairs on wings clubbed
The hairs do not appear to have clubs. From a separate photo with a scale, the hairs appear to be on the order of 0.3 mm long.
