Gall on Hickory - Phylloxera spinosa

Gall on Hickory - Phylloxera spinosa
Shawnee State Forest, Scioto County, Ohio, USA
May 25, 2015
There looks to be two different galls in picture. One type on the leaf and the other on the stem of a hickory tree. We're most interested in the spiky galls on the stem. Thanks!

Hi Laura and Sarah! Both are from some kind of phylloxeran... the spiny one might be Phylloxera spinuloides, but P. caryaecaulis can be spiny too; I haven't seen illustrations of either.

Species ID
The gall on the left looks like Phylloxera spinosa and the gall on the right is probably Phylloxera spinuloides.

Thanks, Charley!
I like the hempiteran galls.
