the Valley Carpenter Bee. Flash (?) alters the color somewhat. This one is 'stealing' nectar from what looks like Salvia microphylla . Compare a similar shot in my garden here: 1 .

I think that's fuscia, as I'd guess you suspected. Dealing with insomnia, I didn't run down your scientific name.
