Hymenopteran ID request

Hymenopteran ID request
Denver, Adams County, Colorado, USA
June 3, 2015
Size: 2 cm
I found what I assume to be an ant or wasp in my house. My first thought is that it is a queen ant, but queen ants usually have wings. I have never seen an ant this big in my area before. This specimen is almost 2 centimeters! It is all black in color.

hard to tell
Would it be possible to take another picture of the specimen, with more light on it? There just isn't enough information in this image to really tell what it is. From what you describe, it may be a carpenter ant. The queen and workers are commonly over 1 cm.

New image
I uploaded a better image. A carpenter ant is probably a good guess. It has the one node on its waste giving even more support for a carpenter ant. The only problem is, that the abdomen of carpenter ants are usually covered in hairs, but this one does not have hairs on its abdomen.
