Fantastic moth is ? - Schinia volupia
Caprock Canyons State Park, Briscoe County, Texas, USA
April 29, 2007
Size: 3/4" +/-
Found 2 of these moths by chance when I stopped on the side of the road to take wildflower pics. One was on this flower (?) and another was on the white flower (?) in the second pic. This is the most brilliant colors I've ever seen in a moth! Any and all ID help appreciated.

Probably 11106 - Schinia volupia
I'll ask Chuck Harp, a Schinia specialist, to verify this because there has been much recent taxonomic revision in this subfamily.

Schinia volupia, of which Chuck Harp says....
"It is a nice image of [Schinia] volupia. It is on one of the Berlandiera species, probably just necturing as it is not very cryptic on that plant."

Bob...
..any comments about the other plant I found it on...the second pic?

The white flower looks like a
The white flower looks like a cress species from the mustard family

Thank you!
I looked around online and found some other pics. Sure looks like that's what it is. Thanks.

WOW
What an amazing moth!

That's what I thought!
In the outside light, it was BRILLIANT on the flowers! I couldn't wait to get home and find out what it was.

Thats what makes this so much
Thats what makes this so much fun! I love sitting and trying to ID these guys... almost always I try to get at least the family before I submit, though not always. I don't think I'd have found this one though, I thought it was a Giant Silk Moth, not a Noctuid!!
