This is probably just emerged, with a shell on the underside of the leaf. I have never seen anything similar to it.

The wikipedia article for Graphocephala coccinea looks like a pretty close match, but I suppose there are similar species. I simply have never seen an insect in the woods so colorful (obviously a newbie!).

Hey, that is the type of material I need. It looks like coccinea is what I have, since it is the only one that can be blue. Thanks!
My son went back out and found some more and got better photos.
