2 km S of Fairy Hill Marsh, Saskatchewan, Canada
June 9, 2014
I've never seen one of these in Southern Saskatchewan before. Should this go to Uhler's Arctic (Oeneis uhleri), or can someone tell me if it's a Oeneis uhleri varuna, or Oeneis uhleri uhleri? To me, it's browner than the uhleri uhleri, it looks like the uhleri varuna. I couldn't get any closer to this butterfly for more photos. Thank you. 2 photos, one how it landed (sideways, as I approached it), and 1 taken from the other side of it to get the wings from the side. It didn't stay long, was fast flying, and back down to the grass. Native prairieland, trees on the edge of the Qu'Appelle Valley were beside it, the Fairy Hill Marsh, below.
