Ptilinus

Ptilinus
Oak Creek, Los Angeles County, California, USA
June 8, 2015
I purposefully put my hand under this beetle so I would catch it after I took the first photograph. Unfortunately it bounced off another leaf on descent and I lost it. Their sensitivity to sound has lost me pictures so much in the past.

This is not the common species, but I don't know if anything can be identified from here. The 9 species seem relatively distinct so maybe something can be done with this black antennae, black head, black thorax, dark brown elytra beetle.

There are lots of bark mines on trees around here perhaps caused by these death watch beetles.
