Strauzia noctipennis, mating - Strauzia noctipennis - Male Female
Plymouth Rock, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 12, 2015
Meandering through large patches of Sawtooth Sunflower, Helianthus grosseserratus, I saw several Strauzia flies. As luck would have it, just 3 days earlier I met (via email) A. Hippee who has been studying the the evolution/speciation of Strauzia. I shared the fly photos with her and this is her reply: "S. arculata and S. noctipennis identification gets complicated, but a couple papers from the late 1980's seem to match the flies that I am identifying in the lab. S. arculata seems to be a fairly well established species on H. grosseserratus. S. noctipennis shares a lot of morphological characteristics with S. longipennis flies, but are found on H. grosseserratus as well. The females of S. noctipennis and S. arculata should be considered 'probably' right, but it is easier to feel confident in the male species identifications."

Moved from Strauzia.
