Formicidae and... - Formica podzolica

Formicidae and... - Formica podzolica
St. Albert, Alberta, Canada
June 20, 2015
I was photographing ants ripping apart an earthworm when Shirl noticed an ant acting weird like it was in distress. Looking through the lens at first I thought it was some kind of mite attached to the leg, until I saw the large image on the computer. Looks like a red ant was in a battle with this Formicidae until someone decapitated it. I've never seen this before, then again I've never paid much attention to ants either.

ID is for the larger, living ant. The smaller one is a Lasius sp. Ants are often each other's worst enemies.
