Red Spotted Purple

This is a Mourning Cloak butterfly. They come out early in the spring and are quite lovely up close!

 
Not Mourning Cloak
Sorry about that. It does resemble the MC, but no cigar! Have never seen this particular one in NH.

not on planet earth it isn't :-)

Certainly looks most like Red-spotted purple. perhaps an intergrade with the White admiral form of the species?

Looks like Limenitis arthemis astyanax, the red-spotted purple.
