Unknown caterpllar - Hemileuca

Unknown caterpllar - Hemileuca
Byfield, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA
June 20, 2015
Size: one inch
Found at Martin Burns WMA. The caterpillar is on the probable foodplant, yarrow (Achillea).

Moved- Hemileuca
Moved from ID Request.

This is probably Hemileuca lucina based on location (H. maia is not currently known from that part of the state), and habitat, this is a pretty wet location where the host plant for H. lucina, meadowsweet, is probably abundant.

This plat that the larva is pictured on is likely not the host plant, or at least not the original one-- later instar larvae tend to wander and consume various other hosts.

Hemileuca lucina
I've compared some other photos of late instar New England Buck Moth (Hemileuca lucina) and they are similar. Martin Burns WMA is a typical Essex County wet meadow. I didn't notice meadowsweet in this location, but it's a common plant.

I've only seen the early instar caterpillars of New England Buck Moth before, and always on meadowsweet. Thanks!
