sheetweb spider - Neriene montana - male

sheetweb spider - Neriene montana - Male
Brossard, Quebec, Canada
May 3, 2007
Size: approx 5mm
I found this spider behind a paving stone left leaning against a wall. They are quite common here, especially later in the year. They make sheet webs, often connecting between broad leaves and a surface like a wall. I assume it overwintered as it seems quite mature and the snow only went a couple of weeks ago. I think they are probably Linyphiinae. Any help would be much appreciated.

I sent a specimen of a female
I sent a specimen of a female of this spider to Dr Pierre Paquin, who is a expert on spider's in Quebec. He very kindly identified it as Neriene montana, which he says is an invasive species from Europe that has recently become established in N. America.

Wow
that's great. I will make a page for it.
Thanks for the update, Andrew.
