Bumblebee with red patch - Bombus perplexus

Bumblebee with red patch - Bombus perplexus
Pleasantville, Westchester County, New York, USA
June 22, 2015
Size: est .65 inches
I am baffled by the red patch on this bumblebee. It looks like the first two abdominal segments are yellow, and that the third is yellow with a red patch on top. The thorax is all yellow, without a black spot. The head is black. The hair is long and mussy looking. Feeding on field thistle. Doesn't seem to be Bombus griseocollis -- the hair is too long, and the thorax lacks the black spot.
