Hippodamia parenthesis or H. lunatomaculata? - Hippodamia parenthesis

Hippodamia parenthesis or H. lunatomaculata? - Hippodamia parenthesis
Davenport, Scott County, Iowa, USA
June 14, 2015
I recognized a "new" Coccinellidae for me, but had no idea I would need to view the tarsal claws to ID it as between Hippodamia parenthesis and H. lunatomaculata because I am west of the Mississippi River. For what's it worth, this picture was taken west of the Mississippi by only about 5 miles. I've included the best look at the tarsal claw I happened to take, but have no idea if it is good enough. Thanks for any help!

Gordon's reference to the Mis
Gordon's reference to the Mississippi is a bit muddy, but becomes more clear when you look at the range maps. Parenthesis is coast to coast but lunatomaculata is strictly a far west species. This would be parenthesis

Great! Thank you.
Great! Thank you.

Gordon's key
confirms in the Hippodamia key that lunatomaculata is restricted to the Pacific coast:

12(10). Tarsal claw with tooth not closely appressed (Fig. 591 i); Pacific coastal region .... 13
- Tarsal claw with tooth closely oppressed (Fig. 587 i); transcontinental .... parenthesis (Say)
13(12). Markings on elytron heavy; prenatal markings reduced (Fig. 591 g); Pacific Northwest .... lunatomaculata dobzhanskyi Chapin
- Markings on elytron reduced (Fig. 591 f); Pronotum with black area heavy; California .... lunatomaculata lunatomaculata Motschulsky

I suspect "west of the Mississippi" was just a generalization rather than a strict guideline.

So this is safe to move to parenthesis.

Thats what I said. :-)
