Size
29-38 mm.
Identification
Mature males: In dorsal and lateral views, only segment 9 is completely blue. Eyespots are small and narrow and connected by an occipital bar. Predominantly black abdomen in the middle segments; in dorsal view narrow blue rings are present.
Range
In the United States, from the Great Plains eastward. The range also continues from Texas into Mexico. In Canada, reported from these provinces: Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.
Season
May to September in most areas.
Food
Tiny flying insects.
