Thanks - I'm sure you are right. I'm a rank amateur and this species was not in the Peterson guide, although the somewhat similar Evergestis pallidata (which is included) might have given me a hint. In more natural light the wings look fairly translucent - not as dark as my photo. I've replaced the posted photo with a slightly lighter one.

forewing light brownish-gray with dark gray smudged patches, irregular median and PM lines, and pale apical patch - the apical patch is most prominent in the photo you have posted even though the photo is rather dark; hindwing white with dark gray apical shading and dark discal spot
