Carabidae
Either Paussinae:
Ozaenini,
as proposed by Eric, or a species of Harpalinae: Helluo*morphoides?
Pronotum densely punctured seems not to fit first possibility,
body appearing glabrous (worn off?) not the second.
No Ozaenini listed for
Florida,
and only 2 sp. of Helluo*morphoides. If from that genus, has to be H.clairvillei then, because 2nd species is bicoloured.

Thanks
Boris.
I believe that is it. Occurs on Florida east coast, and I noticed an odd odor when I picked it up to prevent an escape, which was likely the defensive spray.
Also very similar appearence to this
species
.

Something in Lebiini perhaps?

Carabidae.
I believe this IS a ground beetle (family Carabidae), and pretty sure it is in the primitive subfamily Paussinae. Very weird beetles indeed! Nice find!
