Moved from Pachyschelus purpureus uvaldei.

Well, these really are of uncertain subspecific status, as noted earlier.

Moved
Moved from Pachyschelus purpureus.

Norm Woodley has examined some of these adults, and he is calling them uvaldei (though that's mostly based on host plant). Did you end up sending some to Ted MacRae?

Once overwintering buprestids are done emerging this spring, I'm going to send some off for barcoding, including P. purpureus from both Acalypha and Geranium.

Henry Hespenheide says,
"Interesting. Having revised the genus for the US, I am interested in seeing US specimens reared from Acalypha. Central American subspecies of purpureus use Acalypha as hosts (as do other species of Pachyschelus), but the US nominal population has only been recorded on Geranium."

Thanks, I just sent him an em
Thanks, I just sent him an email!

splendid.

Update
In an email to me and Mike on 8/24/15, Henry wrote:

"I've dissected two males, mounted them, and had a look at them. They are smaller than specimens of Pachyschelus purpureus collected on Geranium and do not have the reddish-purple elytra of P. purpureus uvaldei. This species - in the broad sense - ranges throughout Central America on Acalypha in a variety of local forms and yours is a little different."

So subspecies placement is unclear at this point.
