Chrysops vittatus - Chrysops lateralis - female

Chrysops vittatus - Chrysops lateralis - Female
Hillsborough Township/Sourland Mountain Preserve, Somerset County, New Jersey, USA
July 5, 2015

Moved from Chrysops vittatus.

How did you ID this?

Simply by
Looking through BG photos for a match. Should I move to Genus?

Look for the oval to rectangular shiny spot above the antennae. The color is usually constant within a species (with some exceptions). It is black here, yellow with brown upper border in vittatus, and all yellow in some species.

Thank you
for the helpful tip. I have another Chrysops in the queue...
