giant swallowtail - Papilio

giant swallowtail - Papilio
Henryetta, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, USA
June 27, 2000

Moved
Moved from Western Giant Swallowtail. Since this is a tentative ID, until we confirm that there are occasional rumiko in Oklahoma, we can't be certain which of the pair this is.

rumiko range?
H. rumiko reported to occur in TX adj to s. Oklahoma.
The "striped neck" is very suggestive in this image.

Regarding genitalia, that is the best, but not only. Granted there can be some overlapping physical traits. Both species tend to wander and records for both can extend beyond the "typical breeding zone"

John Fisher contacted Nick Grishin
who wrote: "Looks like rumiko to me, although it is tricky without checking genitalia. They are powerful fliers and are expected to stray far." But also, "I think you should leave it as 'possible'. To count it as a new OK state record, we better inspect a specimen."

John Fisher writes "Per Nick's response this needs to be reclassified as a possible. I'm sending Charles a note and asking him to collect a specimen if one shows up again."

rumiko vs. cresphontes
These guys can be difficult to differentiate and do seem to stray making range definition problematic. I have collected both species and overlap in traits do exist (but the striped neck seems to be unique to rumiko). I also agree with Dave Ferguson that intermediates may compose some populations muddying the waters even more.

Moved from Papilio.

A new one for Me.
