Pyralid Moth - Eoparargyractis irroratalis

Pyralid Moth - Eoparargyractis irroratalis
Mill Creek Nature Center, Gwinnett County, Georgia, USA
August 26, 2004
I originally thought this was in the genus Petrophila, but I eventually received a determination from Brian Scholtens.

Pass those orthopedic shoes, Patrick
I wasn't even in the right genus. James Adams suggested I contact Brian Scholtens and here's his reply.

"Everyone’s guesses were close, but they are looking in the wrong genus. This is the genus Eoparargyractis. The species here is E. irroratalis, which is the common one along much of the east coast. Also in the genus are plevie (more in the midwest) and floridalis (which seems to be along the east coast also, but has a browner base of the forewing)."

Yours looks different...
than the 3 species whose photos you linked to. Too bad there's no web images of P. santafealis to compare to.

Moth resources
I just saw my moth expert friend the other night. I'm going to run some images by him. He also has a colleague who is an expert on pyralids. Maybe you can save up some images and we can e-mail them the URL's for some help.

One thing my friend recommends is to try to get photos of the hindwings if possible. (I know that can be tough--I always do that last, because it often scares off the moth.)

NCSU is helpful, but there are so many moths about there is no way it's complete. There are still new species being described in the Carolinas.
