Amblyomma maculatum in Arizona? - Amblyomma

Amblyomma maculatum in Arizona? - Amblyomma
Madera Canyon, Sta Cruz County, Arizona, USA
July 7, 2015

Moved
Moved from Amblyomma triste.

Placing it at the genus level for now because of remarks https://bugguide.net/node/view/1421335. Part of the A. maculatum group, which is probably where a lot of the AZ and west TX records should end up for now until genetic work is done.

Moved from Hard Ticks.

Hmmm
I believe this is Amblyomma triste based on range

not sure
similar debates on BG turned out to be A. maculatum. Not sure we can confirm either way from this pic unfortunately

That's a bummer
Seems like once you get to AZ the ID gets more difficult without specimen in hand.

Agreed with ID
Looks like Amblyomma maculatum to me. They seem to move around quite a bit as I've been finding them in Illinois as well. I think they like to hitch rides on migrating birds which can place them in areas that aren't in their typical range.

Moved
Moved from Dermacentor.

Do you see how different the shield is?

Ack
the shield isn't the problem--the mouthparts are! Yeah, these mouthparts are too long for Dermacentor! I should've seen that the first time.

The habitus didn't look quite right for Ambylomma, but I think that is just the camera angle. Unfortunately, it cannot be keyed without seeing the coxae (i.e., I'd need a straight, clear, ventral view).

Cooley (1944) recorded A. maculatum from Willcox, Arizona, but didn't speculate as to whether it was introduced or established.

Well, running blind without a key here, I know
anyway, there are very similar photos in Mike Quinn's Texas images. As for introduced or established: I found it in my shirt, and I had not been anywhere out of state or in fact outside Madera Canyon. It could have been from Proctor Rd or from the Mt Baldy trail head where I noticed it.
