Explanation of Names
Sitona cylindricollis Fåhraeus 1840
3.6-5 mm
Body lacking erect setae, exept for some above eyes ("eyebrows"), covered with dark and greyish scales, the latter condensed into 3 indistinct bands on pronotum and a conspicous spot on base of elytra near shoulder. Remainder of elytra +/- mottled.
native to w. Palaearctic (to e. Siberia), introduced and now widespread in NA (north to 55°N)(1)(2)
Prefers sweetclover (Melilotus spp.) among other Fabaceae
important pest of sweetclover; earliest NA record: QC 1924(1)
