Hickory Horned Devil - Egg to Caterpillar - Citheronia regalis

Hickory Horned Devil - Egg to Caterpillar - Citheronia regalis
Duluth, Fulton County, Georgia, USA
August 12, 2004
Here he is a few days after hatching. The "horns" are interesting looking with the spoon like tips. I don't have any theories about the reddish midabdominal coloring. At any rate, this color phase didn't last long. Even here, it was recognizable enough for me to guess that it must be a hickory horned devil.

Coloring
The coloring at the first instar is so when they are resting and curl up (like a j shape), they look like bird poop!
