Hemaris X? - Eichlinia cucurbitae

Hemaris X? - Eichlinia cucurbitae
Central Park, Manhattan, New York, USA
July 12, 2015
Size: 1.5 inches long
Flies just like Hemaris Thysbe, Hemaris Diffinis (clearwing moth, snowberry moth) but has a few features that they apparently don't. The body is mostly grey. Most noticeable is its two legs furthest away from its head - they are covered with thick orange fur and they flap around as it darts from flower to flower. It has a repeating circular pattern on the outside of it's body, and the wings at rest appear solid grey (at least that's how it appeared when it was resting) but evidently while it flies its wings look very similar to the above mentioned two -clear. It has yellow eyes and the antennae are also a little different than these two - they appear a little thicker and curve outward at the ends. Finally the middle two legs appear to have a zebra-like pattern on them, which I also have not noticed on the other Hemaris varieties.
