Enormous Red Wasp Nest - Polistes annularis

Enormous Red Wasp Nest - Polistes annularis
Somewhere in the eastern part of the state..., Texas, USA
Size: 12" in diameter!!!
This enormous red wasp nest is part of my own personal collection. This monstrous nest is literally the size of a dinner plate! I am holding it to show its gigantic proportions. By the way, it was built inside a nest box for wood ducks. This tells me that this rural species sometimes constructs its nest inside protected cavities. Although typical places to find nests are attached to the limbs of trees & bushes overhanging water (Southern fishermen beware!) and also attached to the eaves of buildings.

Replacement image?
Terry, I did not move this image to the Portraits of BugGuide Contributors section (though I believe that is where it should end up) because it is currently the only image you have posted of this impressive Polistes nest. However, it would be preferable to have this nest image featured in the guide all by itself, or with an inanimate object for scale. If it is possible for you to replace this image with such a photo in the future, that would be great! Thanks.

Hmmmmmmm...
I'll see what I can do. This might take me some time though.

By the way, thanks for leaving this image here in the meantime. I will let you know when I have a replacement image so you can move this one for me.
