Genus Zanclognatha species ID request - Zanclognatha
Turtle Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin, USA
June 10, 2015
gathering_2015 I believe this is but hesitate to place to species in this difficult Genus. This one looked black on the sheet and looked more slender than most of the examples.

Habitat?
Your guess looks pretty good. From what I understand, Zanclognatha martha is highly specialized. The larvae feed on decomposing bear oak leaves.

Thank you Steve. Unfortunately I don't have an e-mail address for the family, Tom and Vicky West, who hosted the gathering 2015. I did not notice what I would call scrub oak, but it was an area of cleared fields edged by heavy woods on the edge of a small lake, hilly and beautiful. It was about 100 miles NE of St. Paul, Minn. You might have Valerie Bugh's e-mail address. I do not.

Probably Not Zanclognatha martha
Just reread some descriptions. The distal 1/4 of the for wings are not appreciably darkened and there are some other slight differences. Also that species along with bear oak are out of range. This is probably protumnusalis or in that complex but there is mention of a similar unnamed species from Wisconsin here and here which may be conspecific with martha. I think dentata can be ruled out but not entirely certain.

I'm thinking we should eave this at the genus level.
