Tipula metacomet - female

Tipula metacomet - Female
Snowhill Rd North of Cabin Branch Creek, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
April 27, 2004
Size: 42 mm
Close-up of thorax. Reminds me of some sort of wacky helicopter. Body length was measured at about 42 mm. This thing was huge!

Compare to similar images of these large crane flies:

size
Is 42mm the size including the legs, or just the body of the insect itself

Body length
Yes, I double-checked another photo with an adjacent ruler--body length was 42 mm. The size drew my attention.

On my images, I try to give specifics on what was measured, usually in the caption to the first (left-most) image uploaded--along the bottom, labelled "Images of this specimen". More specifics are with that image for this cranefly.

Thanks for your interest, of course. If you have any good ideas on this one, let me know.
