C. novemnotata larva - Coccinella novemnotata

C. novemnotata larva - Coccinella novemnotata
Simi Valley, Ventura County, California, USA
July 18, 2015
This is one of about 6-7 larva of the same appearance inhabiting milkweed in a small suburban park with at least 4 adult Coccinella novemnotata.

These larvae are quite typical for Coccinella in the general morphology. However they are strongly glaucous in color rather than dark grey, and the orange abdominal markings are very saturated compared to those of say C. 7-punctata.

The 4th abdominal segment also lacks a pale spot in the center which is a key diagnostic listed in the Coccinella larvae key (and in fact, all segments apart from the first three lack pale central patches, on 7-spot every segment often has a patch).
