Oak mines - Japanagromyza viridula

Oak mines - Japanagromyza viridula
Meadowbrook Park, Champaign County, Illinois, USA

dorsal view

Moved from Chinquapin Leaf-miner Moth.

I've been fooled by these before, but if you look closely you'll see that the frass is in little lumps and wet streaks, not stringy as in eriocraniid mines. This leaf also has a few "shotholes" made by the female using her ovipositor to puncture the leaf and drink its sap.

Moved from ID Request.

Dyseriocrania griseocapitella
These look to be mines of Dyseriocrania griseocapitella (Eriocraniidae). The date of 10 May is just when full-term larvae/leaf mines of that species would be present.
