From Latin labrum meaning lip (1).
Identification
labrum noun - the upper "lip" of the arthropod mouth, a somewhat convex horny plate (sclerite) which is united posteriorly by a membranous hinge with the clypeus. Functions as a mouthpart, though not an appendage like the others. Diagrams and photos:
