If Chalcosyrphus, could this be C. anthreas? It sure seems to have widely distributed pale areas on the legs.

As Martin says it's Chalcosyrphus, it is certainly C. anthreas - the only similar species in range is C. nemorum and it has much less white on the knee.

Almost certainly C. anthreas.
Almost certainly C. anthreas. The problem is telling it from one of the 12 Xylota that look very similar... so I will leave it in Xylotina for now.

I understand the difficulty, as there is no scale to compare it with in the photo. It was certainly much larger than the nearby Xylota I am familiar with and different looking right away in the field...And behaving differently. But then I don't know if any Xylota are in the 10-12 mm range. Gotta check on that.
