Noctuidae: Capsula oblonga - Photedes panatela

Noctuidae: Capsula oblonga - Photedes panatela
Emerado, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
July 22, 2015
Size: Length ~ 2 cm
This specimen may be an unusual example of the Oblong Sedge Borer (9449). What makes this unusual, I think, is it's small size (only 1.7 cm) and the notable lack of a classically long abdomen. It's pale and has the two rows of black dots on FW, like C. oblonga should have, but it seems too short (local oblonga are about 2.5 cm long). Although the size is about right, the color and markings are all wrong for C. subflava (9450), another Capsula species found at this locale. I'll place this specimen here for expert attention.

Moved from Cordgrass Borers.

Tentative ID by Jim Vargo. BOLD sample NOC14366 would seem to support the determination.

Photedes defecta???
I don't think this is Capsula oblonga but do not have any good guesses. I do have one bad guess, Photedes defecta.

Thanks, Steve!
I'll move this specimen over to the genus Photedes, where it will doubtlessly sit for a while. ;-)
