Stopped me in my tracks.. - Xylocopa californica - Female
Pima County, Arizona, USA
July 7, 2014
Size: Close to 2" long.
I took several pics of this wasp to get the light right. The insect did not move. I am surprised that I did not find this wasp on an image search. I would think that it made this hole in the bench as a nest.

Female
Peter, she looks somewhat like a large Carpenter Bee in the genus Xylocopa, but I'm not exactly sure and she looks to be a little bit too blue and very shiny too. Anyway, here is an example of the southern version of the genus, Xylocopa micans, from Florida:

OK, here is an Arizona Version, Xylocopa californica:

Others should have a much better idea of who she is.
Good Luck!

Don't recognize. Please correct state.
Sorry, I don't recognize the insect.
Could you correct the state? It reads "New York". Also, can you remove the "AZ" from the City field or the County field.

In that case: Welcome to Bugguide!
You photo is pretty good. I expect someone will recognize the specimen.

I'm sorry if I criticized too harshly. Bugguide enters its images and associated information into a searchable database. Thus it's best to make such information as accurate and consistent as possible.
