This is located on a lower branch of a soft maple tree. I did not see any other ones. Does anyone know what type of insect constructed this and if whatever hatches from it will harm the tree? It is certainly an interesting structure. Sort of wasp nest-like, but completely enclosed. I did not touch it, so I don't know if it is paper-like as if it were made by wasps.

ID of a Gall
Thanks for the ID. I looked up info on both galls and gall midges. I know a little more than I did before. You bug guys are good and quick to respond. I will keep an eye on the gall. Maybe I can catch something hatching out. This might be on a grape vine in the soft maple tree not on the maple itself. Will have to have a second look. Galls are strangely beautiful. Now I will be out looking for more to photograph. Thanks again.
