Bee Imposter? - Bombus griseocollis

Bee Imposter? - Bombus griseocollis
Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
July 29, 2015
Size: 1 inch
This guy has been hanging around my balcony on the 5th floor in Chicago for a couple weeks. He looks like a bumble bee but flies like a stealth.
His abdomen is fuzzy and pulsates rapidly as he breathes? His head moves independently of the body which I've never noticed in bees.

Male Bumble Bee!
James, your bee looks like a male Brown-belted Bumble Bee, Bombus griseocollis. Here is one from DuPage County:

Good Luck!

Brown-belted Bumble Bee
Hi Bob,

I believe you nailed it!

Thanks,
Jim

Male!
James, the males look very similar to the queens, but you may be able to count eleven flagellomeres on his antennae and the eyes of the males are bigger; they cover up more of the face and are more bulbous looking, especially when seen from this angle. I'm convinced!
